Now Let’s Talk About That Felony Conviction of Yours

Stuff You Won’t Get From Most Books Like This

I t was on a particularly hot summer night, and you and a couple of your homies went to a bar to see if you could get a little sumpun-sumpun goin’. Your boys spot three really fine ladies at a table in the back and the math works, three of you, three of them, so you all go back and start putting your moves down. Your boys’ ladies are laughing and flirting, but yours just sits there. Every time you try to start something up, she just turns the other way. Who do she think she be, anyway? She sittin’ there with her funbags hangin’ out and disrespecting you! Finally, all of you leave and you follow her home. She think she all that! You follow her to her apartment to show her who da man! Conviction: Rape.

It didn’t seem like such a big deal. Nobody would ever miss the money. There was so much cash flowing into the organization, and your best friend was the office manager. She would make sure that nobody noticed while you cooked the books and arranged for amounts of cash to disappear, a little here and a little there. But it wasn’t a little bit of cash, was it? It ended up amounting to thousands, and you and Grace split it evenly. But it was for a good cause. After all, you think, George is on dialysis now and the medical bills are rolling in so fast. You really need the money and neither of you is getting any younger. Conviction: Embezzlement.

The car belonged to a friend’s dad, so your buddy said. You and a couple other kids went for a ride up on the bluff one evening after school, but Jake was driving just a little too fast and you got stopped by the police. As it turned out, the car was stolen, and Jake hadn’t mentioned anything at all about the little plastic bag under the seat with the white pow-der in it. Conviction: Auto Theft and Narcotics Possession.

You came home after work one night, really beat. You expected to find dinner on the table, but what you found was your wife in bed with some guy you’d never seen before. You went out to the truck and took your rifle out of the rack. Conviction: Murder.

The food stamps got turned off because you didn’t turn in your job search logs like you were supposed to. The kids are hungry, the utilities are off, and you just don’t know what to do next. You can’t go to your parents for money again. After all, they disapprove of everything you’ve ever done, including being with your baby-daddy and having those kids. You’re on your own and desperate. Even though the baby-daddy is long gone, the nine-millimeter Glock he brought home one night is still in the hall closet. You get it and go down to the liquor store.
